Sleep_Deprivationsleep deprivation Cause slowing metabolism, which causes the body to use less energy, according to a recent study in Europe.

Results reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, add to evidence that sleep deprivation can cause weight gain, not only adding the hunger but also slow the process of burning calories. Similarly, as quoted by Reuters on Monday (5/16/2011).

"The study also states that by sleeping a lot probably will prevent weight gain," said Christian Benedict from Uppsala University in Sweden.

"Our findings suggest that sleep deprivation can reduce one's energy," he added.

Previous research has shown that sleep deprivation also showed association with increased levels of stress and hunger longer.

To identify the mechanism of sleep deprivation such as what causes this effect, Benedict and colleagues tested 14 people the respondent for several days with various kinds of sleep, lack of sleep, no sleep at all and normal sleep. After that they measure how much the respondents eat, blood sugar, hormone levels and their metabolism.

Through these studies Christian Benedict and his colleagues found that less sleep at night can slow down the metabolism for the next day, reducing energy for breathing and digestion of 5 to 20 percent, compared to people who sleep soundly.

The research results also revealed high blood sugar levels of respondents in the morning. In addition, the hormone that causes hunger, Ghrelin and Cartisol stress hormone also rose on the respondents who experienced sleep deprivation.
